Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify factors affecting international tourist arrivals and spending in Mexico. A methodology based on historical time series econometric models applying the SARIMAX-GARCH method was used. The study demonstrates that international visitor flows to Mexico fluctuate with the US business cycle and that the price of airline fuel does not influence visitor flows, although insecurity does. International tourist consumption and spending patterns are identified. The study analyzes indicators that had not been used in the study of international tourism, applying the methodology for the first time in North America. The conclusions indicate that Mexico is the most visited country by Americans, although the advantage of proximity is limited due to low tourist spending and factors such as insecurity.
